J.A. Taylor Photography
Raw and Uncut

Jay Pack of J.A. Taylor Photography, by day is a musculoskeletal radiologist, but in his free time he creates fabulous works of art using unique techniques such as vintage film cameras. He discovered his love for photography when his first daughter was born four years ago. It began as a hobby but soon became a passion and eventually a profession. He transitioned from digital to film when the high resolution, picture perfect images were not quite satisfactory to him. Pack wanted to create something with a soul, something organic. It was then he began to experiment with 35mm film and eventually moved into what he does now, which is large format photography.

“When light interacts with the film emulsions, something magical happens, and I absolutely love that. I really like the challenge of large format because nothing is automatic, everything is done by the photographer.” says Pack.

Pack will display new work entitled "Raw and Uncut" in the MIDWESTMEDIA and @1614 studio. A collection of color and black and white images shot with a variety of cameras and films such as large and medium format and expired film will be on display. Most of the black and white images were hand developed by Pack himself.

A remarkable aspect of Pack’s work is that all of the proceeds from his photography go to benefit children’s charities across the world. Pack has found a very effective way to combine his passion of art and children’s charities.

"I want my viewers to see the beauty not only in the photographs, but also in doing something for someone and expecting nothing in return. In my case, I give to children who are fighting unfair fights, but regardless of the cause, it's just so rewarding to turn something you're passionate about into something that benefits people." says Pack.

Gestures

May Yang utilizes her honed skill set, cultural background and the environment surrounding her to produce art. In 2008, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art with concentrations in printmaking and book arts. May earned a professional printer’s certificate from Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Albuquerque, NM in 2009.

"Conceptually my work has in the past my work been a lot about my family and my background; the dual culture household I have lived in and grew up in. It's evolving, the concepts." says May.

May will display new work titled Gesture in the MIDWESTMEDIA and @1614 studio. A collection of new and old framed mixed media pieces along with unframed screen prints and lithography will be on display as well.

"I'm putting something personal on the canvas, or the board, or paper, or whatever substrate it is." Yang said.
"How that is able to inspire other people is really interesting. That is really satisfying to me."

Mark Waits
a bygone era

The main body of Mark's work is straight-forward, black and white fine art photographs of forgotten and overlooked places and things. Mark aims to create a visually-interesting portrayal of the character of a subject as opposed to merely making a document of that subject.

"My approach to making photographs is simple: I drive down small highways or dirt roads, listening to old Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen records searching for some gritty thing to catch my eye." Waits says. "I get a thrill when I see a rusty car, grafittied train, or clapboard church and instantly know how I want to compose it. I grab my camera and immediately get to work."

It's a great feeling when the lighting is just right, I've positioned myself perfectly, composed a strong design, and captured the essence of a subject.

Desmond Mason
peace, comfort, and happiness

During his years at Oklahoma State University, Desmond Mason blossomed as a basketball player under the coaching of Eddie Sutton. He appeared in 3 NCAA tournaments, while advancing to the Elite 8. Mason’s basketball career was extended when he was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics with the 17th pick of the NBA Draft’s first round.

Desmond’s time at OSU not only helped his basketball skills, but helped developed his real passion, which was the arts. During his senior season Desmond started to get noticed nationally not for just his basketball talent, but his artistic ability as well, garnering a feature in Sports Illustrated.

"As I look at my paintings, when you paint something and you don't like it you can paint and start over. You can't start over in life, but if you take life as a daily thing, the next day is a new canvas."

In 2004 Desmond founded the Desmond Mason Art Show. Sales from his artwork are donated to numerous local charities. He has sold over 130 art pieces to collectors all over the world and has used his artistic talents to inspire kids and help his community.

"I look at why I paint, and what I paint for, and how I create..." Mason said. "Emotionally wherever I am, that is what my art reflects. That's really why once I start a piece I try not to stop until I'm done, because that emotion will change."

Mason has said, what inspires his art the most is his wife Andrea and their two children Jada and Elijah. Desmond is a true Renaissance Man and is known best for his integrity, philanthropy and passion for positive change.

new works

Growing up in Oklahoma City, Dylan was surrounded by a very creative family atmosphere which allowed him to find his passion for art at a young age. Throughout his schooling Dylan continued to build his creative talents in many art related studies that led to his BFA in Graphic Design obtained with honors in 2006.

With a drive for supporting emerging artists he has built a close relationship with his local arts community and over the past few years has began to pursue national and international artistic connections.

Dylan currently works as a graphic designer and art director in Oklahoma City while pursuing his passion for visual arts. His work has been shown in many exhibits in the United States including: Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, Brooklyn and Los Angeles. In 2009 his work overseas for a solo exhibition in Hannover, Germany.

"What I am trying to pursue with the body of work is an exploration into a deeper side of my own personal spirit." Bradway says. "I want that to inspire people to look into the idea of a spiritual side of life that may not be based off a religion or doctrine, but more of living life, and experience. That type of spiritual self."

Serpentine Silhouettes

A love for photography and digital art has kept Tammy Brummell in the graphic design business since 1993, but a passion for creativity and self-expression enticed her into exploring the use of powerful textures and multi-layered images as an artist.

“I try to find beauty in the little things,” Brummell explained. “Whether it’s an old coin or a dried up flower, I find inspiration in what’s around me.”

Tammy has suffered from MD since she was in her 20's. That hasn't stopped her from making some truly beautiful art.

In this collection, Brummell has focused on using photos of beautiful women from the 20’s and 30’s and combined them with tattered book covers and parts of old money.

“I start with a photo and turn it into a graphic image,” Brummell explained, “Then I take away layers so that bits of the background can show through. At the end, it melds into a glamorously deconstructed composition.”

Inspired by her battle with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and the notion of flying, both metaphorically and literally, Black creates art that transports its viewer into her world. Black’s paintings pop with vibrant colors and contain both simple and complex subject matter, although she is mostly known for her owl paintings. She enjoys working with mediums ranging from charcoal to pastels.

“This is my first series of paintings, they are products of introspection,” Black explained. “It took a lot of self-reflection and dealing with emotions that stem from the very core of who I am.”

Jenkins has been working on his craft since he began welding in 1991, when he was casting metal to make a living. It was only after some inspiration from local artists in his neighborhood of Berkeley, CA that he started experimenting with metal and other mediums as an artistic expression. Now living in Norman, Jenkins continues to break boundaries with his sculptures.

My techniques range from conventional to unconventional,” Jenkins explained. “Welding and casting are quite conventional methods that I use. I also splash metal on the ground, which is not a conventional method.

"I kinda like the little bit sad look, so you can think kinda what is she thinking, or what is going on. I think we find a little bit beauty in sadness." - JUURI

Tokyo-born Japanese+American artist JUURI’s mixed-media work portrays the delicate beauty of Japanese women, expressed through layers of mixed media and strategic paint drips. Fashion, film, music videos, and literature all provide JUURI with inspiration for my surreal-looking subjects.

All works feature beautiful Japanese women with traditional elements, presented in a modern way. JUURI explores the juxtaposition of realism and non-objectivity, elegance and tumult, tradition and modernism, innocence and mortality.

the secret garden

"I know how I feel when I have had a long day or when I have been dealing with a lot of stress - and all I want to do is lock myself in my studio and make art." - Brooke Rowlands.

Born and raised in central New Jersey, 28-year-old artist Brooke Rowlands has been a proud resident of Oklahoma since 2002. Over the years she’s developed a homogenous blend of both contemporary and still life, often incorporating flowers, birds, trees and fish into gorgeous abstract backgrounds.

But color has been the consistent driving force behind Brooke’s art, whether it be acrylic painting or paper collage. Her bold choices, strong contrast and amazing sense for complimentary hues and patterns demand attention without begging for it.

Brooke’s ultimate desire would be for her art to be in a home where it is appreciated simply for what it is…something beautiful.
